Functional skills

Functional skills are defined as

"the core elements of English, mathematics and ICT that provide an individual with the essential knowledge, skills and understanding to enable them to operate confidently, effectively and independently in life and at work"
All young people will take new Functional Skills qualifications, whatever route they are on. Stand alone qualifications in English. mathematics and ICT at level 1 and level 2 will be available for all learners over the age of 14 years. They are expected to replace all existing Key and Basic Skills qualifications from 2011.
